Advanced CAR Statistics Workshop
Feb. 17-19, 2006 • Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz.
Return to IRE Training

This session is aimed at strengthening the skills of reporters who want to move beyond basic computer-assisted reporting and use statistical analysis in their work. Reporters should know spreadsheet and database manager applications and have experience in computer-assisted reporting. Many newsrooms have super equipment and bright reporters; the seminar hopes to ensure that newspapers get the most out of both. Reporters participating in the seminar will be able to return home and craft statistics into stories that count. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Steve Doig, Knight Chair in Journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University, Jennifer LaFleur, computer-assisted reporting editor for The Dallas Morning News, and Holly Hacker, education reporter at The Dallas Morning News, will lead the session.

The three-day IRE statistics workshop I attended in Arizona last year gave me computer skills that really helped get this project going. Before the workshop, my computer-assisted reporting skills were pretty much limited to spreadsheets. Afterward, I had the skills to analyze huge databases. I combined 11 U.S. Department of Transportation files to include every reported transportation-related hazardous materials incident from 1993 through 2004. I then found, among other things, that our own San Bernardino County had the most toxic-chemical incidents involving trains when compared with counties nationwide.
