Advanced CAR Statistics Workshop
April 4-6, 2008 • Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz.
Return to IRE Training

This session is aimed at strengthening the skills of reporters who want to move beyond basic computer-assisted reporting and use statistical analysis in their work. Reporters should know spreadsheet and database manager applications and have experience in computer-assisted reporting. Many newsrooms have super equipment and bright reporters; the seminar hopes to ensure that newspapers get the most out of both. Reporters participating in the seminar will be able to return home and craft statistics into stories that count. Session leaders will be Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Steve Doig, Knight Chair in Journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University; Jennifer LaFleur, computer-assisted reporting editor for The Dallas Morning News; and Holly Hacker, education reporter for The Dallas Morning News.

Great boot camp. There were a lot of immediately useful techniques to begin building a foundation for more advanced
stories.
— Geoff Dutton, The Columbus Dispatch

This workshop was one of the greatest learning experiences that I’ve had in a long time (and I’ve been in graduate school for three years).
