Computer-Assisted Reporting Boot Camps at the Missouri School of Journalism
CAR Boot Camps are on-campus seminars from a Sunday afternoon to a Friday afternoon. They give journalists a jumpstart in computer-assisted reporting techniques. Our regular boot camps are scheduled about five times per year.

These unique seminars train journalists to acquire electronic information, use spreadsheets and databases to analyze the information and to translate that information into high-impact stories. In addition, the institute provides follow-up help when participants return to their news organizations.

Fellowships available: IRE and NICAR offer special fellowships to the Computer-Assisted Reporting Boot Camps. The fellowships cover tuition and most of travel and lodging costs. These fellowships are for minority journalists and for journalists at small news organizations. For application information, please visit our fellowships page.

Computer-Assisted Reporting Boot Camps are partially supported by the John S. & James. L. Knight Foundation.

NICAR is a joint program of IRE and the Missouri School of Journalism.

What former boot campers say:

“Great program! You expanded my thinking on what is doable.”
— Josh Wilson, WFTV-Orlando

"The course is mind-altering. Suddenly you see all these possibilities for fact-driven or number-driven journalism."
— Tricia Schwennesen, San Antonio Express-News
