Unleashing the Watchdogs: Host: Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University Editors, put some new bite into your journalism! This workshop, hosted by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University and co-sponsored by IRE, NewsTrain, APME and ASNE, will feature top editors and trainers with a special focus on watchdog journalism; better editing techniques, and online journalism. We'll share tips and techniques on how to get watchdog journalism done, especially from reporters covering beats and daily stories. We'll cover how to guide reporters in the effective use of the Internet, open records laws, computer-assisted reporting, coaching writers, editing common story forms and new media convergence and anonymous sources.. We'll discuss story coaching, thinking through ethical dilemmas and writing for online. Speakers will include: David Boardman; managing editor of The Seattle Times; John Carroll, former editor of the Los Angeles Times and Knight Visiting Lecturer at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government; Robert Giles, curator of the Nieman Foundation; Brant Houston, executive director of IRE and NICAR; Deborah Nelson; Washington, D.C., investigative editor for the Los Angeles Times; Tim Nostrand, assistant managing editor/projects for The (Hackensack, N.J.) Record; Michael Roberts, deputy managing editor/staff development, The Arizona Republic; Daniel Rubin, a reporter who writes Blinq, a blog on blogs for The Philadelphia Inquirer ; and Lillian Swanson, project director, APME NewsTrain.
