Editors, put some new bite into your journalism! IRE, with support from American Society of Newspaper Editors, and Associated Press Managing Editors’ NewsTrain are collaborating on this seminar for midlevel editors. This workshop will feature top editors and trainers with a special focus on watchdog journalism; better editing techniques, and online journalism. We'll share tips and techniques on how to get watchdog journalism done, especially by reporters covering beats and daily stories. The workshop will also cover the guiding of reporters in the effective use of the Internet, open records laws, computer-assisted reporting and anonymous sources. And it will look at ways to present packages in multi-media forms and how to guide a staff to do great journalism in changing newsroom times. In Syracuse, IRE is combining its highly rated Better Watchdog Workshop for reporters, editors, and producers with a special program for midlevel editors, called Unleashing the Watchdogs/NewsTrain. The Better Watchdog track will offer practical nuts and bolts instruction for reporters, especially those at small- to medium-sized newsrooms and in bureaus of larger news organizations. The instructors will be experienced journalists and trainers from IRE. The Unleashing the Watchdogs/NewsTrain track will feature watchdog sessions brought by IRE and management, editing and multi-media sessions from APME’s NewsTrain. Watchdog sessions feature top editors who have years of experience in producing investigative and enterprise work.. They share tips and techniques on how to get watchdog journalism done, especially from reporters covering beats and daily stories. NewsTrain’s teachers will focus on ways to use multi-media approaches for powerful journalism and ways to effectively plan coverage and manage a staff in changing newsroom times. Both Better Watchdog and Unleashing the Watchdogs/NewsTrain include an overview of watchdog reporting, effective use of FOI and effective use of the Internet. |
