WebCamp: Online tips and strategies for journalists

Every reporter uses the Internet, but most only use a fraction of what's out there. Learn the tricks that will let you do smarter searches, discover the "invisible Web" and the vast amounts of information hidden there, and unlock the secrets that most journalists never learn about maximizing use of the Web.

Schedule and Expected Speakers

This special workshop takes the best of IRE’s popular Internet sessions and expands them to include the latest skills journalists need to succeed. This one-day training will cover the following and more:

  • Backgrounding people and businesses online.
  • Understanding Web 2.0 tools and their journalistic uses.
  • Mining the invisible Web – areas not searchable by Google and traditional search engines.
  • Document and data trails: Finding records and data online and downloading it for analysis.
  • Saving time online through strategic searching and tricks.
  • Exploring the basics of computer-assisted reporting.

Registration

Fees: $45 professional; $20 students for main workshop. Free to SIUC students.

Cancellation policy: Cancellations must be sent via e-mail to Amy Johnston, amy@ire.org. There is a $20 processing fee ($10 for students) for cancellations until the day before the event. Refunds will not be given for cancellations on the day of, or after, the event.

Optional Computer-Assisted Reporting Training

Attend this hands-on workshop and learn how to use Excel spreadsheets for deadline and beat reporting on budgets, salaries, and Census data. Also learn how to dig deeper using the Internet and find valuable datasets for your stories.

This optional CAR session will be held from 4 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. The cost is $25 (in addition to workshop registration). Seating is limited to 15 participants. advance registration is required.
