12 News (NBC-Phoenix) exposed a Mesa police lieutenant who thought he was above the law and tried to get away with extreme drunken driving. Police video footage of the traffic stop obtained by the station reveals the lieutenant belittled and berated the arresting officer – a rookie cop – and his field training officer and implied he deserved to be treated differently than rank-and-file.

After the investigation aired, the department faced public backlash after viewers saw visual evidence in the report and the police chief kept silent. When the lieutenant was faced with termination, he suddenly resigned/retired.

The Mesa Police Department has a history of sweeping officer misconduct under the rug and disciplining employees with the proverbial slap on the wrist.
