A four-month investigation by USA TODAY cataloged every property President Trump’s companies own across the country. It found those companies own more than 400 condo units and home lots worth at least $250 million in the U.S. alone. In contrast to developments where Trump licenses his name to a separate developer for a flat fee, these are individual properties where sales would enrich him personally.

Anyone wishing to court favor with the president can purchase these properties, potentially purposefully overpaying, including individuals, corporations and foreign interests. If the properties are bought under the name of a shell company, it would be impossible for the public to know whose interests they represent.

Because the president is exempt from conflict-of-interest laws that apply to most federal employees, he is not required to disclose who buys the units or when.
