Position: Assistant Lecturer or Assistant Instructor, dependent on qualifications, in Electronic Journalism at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, Department of Radio, Television, and Digital Media. This is a term, non-tenure track appointment.
The Department: Established in 1957, The Department of Radio, Television, and Digital Media has close to 250 undergraduates and 14 full-time faculty members who are accomplished scholars, professionals and artists. Students in the Department combine the analytical with hands-on practice to become innovative media producers and scholars. Our faculty guide students not only in the use of the latest technologies, but also in developing an understanding of the social, political and economic contexts of the media they produce and analyze. RTD students can concentrate in several areas of study: Digital Media Arts and Animation, Electronic Journalism, Media Industries, Radio/Audio Production, Sports Media, and Video Production. Students also broaden their knowledge of the field through elective courses in Media Studies. A Television Studies minor is also offered. Faculty and students work closely with the University’s public radio and television stations, WSIU-FM & WSIU-TV, which are located in the College, as well as with the Department of Cinema & Photography and the School of Journalism.
Qualifications: Position requires a minimum of 10 years of experience as an Electronic Journalist. For appointment at the rank of Assistant Lecturer, a Master’s Degree is required. For appointment at the rank of Assistant Instructor, the applicant must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic Journalism or a related field, and exceptional tested professional experience (examples include but are not limited to: five (5) or more years of experience in a top 50 TV market as defined by Nielsen Digital Media Research, receipt of regional or national awards, evidence of effective prior teaching experience in a 4-year college setting, expert experience as a consultant offering workshops and/or seminars). For appointment at either rank, skills must include broadcast news writing, news and/or sports reporting, producing, multimedia journalism, and/or investigative reporting in a digital environment.
Duties: The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in some combination of the areas of broadcast newswriting, news and or sports reporting, producing, and/or investigative reporting; will work with student-produced news programs including River Region Evening Edition, a nightly broadcast news program; and will collaborate with the staff of WSIU Public Broadcasting and the Daily Egyptian newspaper. The successful candidate is expected to become an active member of the department.
