Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a data specialist to work on contract through December on some of The Post’s most ambitious data sets for long-term investigative projects.

You’d join The Post’s Advanced Storytelling Lab, working closely with investigations editors, the FOIA director and other newsroom teams to identify, scrape, clean and upload data sets to shared databases used for investigative stories. You would also work with project leads to occasionally process documents through optical character recognition (OCR) tools. The ideal candidate has experience with data scraping, cleaning, analysis and is familiar with filing and tracking FOIA requests. The ability to manage multiple, simultaneous projects each with large amounts of data and create organizational systems and documentation that make sense for multiple users is essential. Familiarity with Python is preferred but not required.

This position will be based in our Washington newsroom.

Candidates should upload a resume and cover letter to our jobs portal by May 11. In the cover letter, highlight your role in previous data projects, describe a time you faced challenges acquiring necessary data and how you navigated the situation. The cover letter should be addressed to Deputy Director of Strategic Initiatives Elite Truong, Director of Strategic Initiatives Jeremy Gilbert and Managing Editor Tracy Grant.
