Documented seeks a full-time development director to develop and implement a fundraising strategy alongside the co-executive directors. This role will involve applying for grants, building new relationships with foundations and nurturing existing ones. Now in its third year, Documented has received funding from the Ford Foundation, Borealis Philanthropy and the Emerson Collective, among other organizations.

The director will be expected to design and execute a fundraising program that builds upon our previous efforts with foundations and membership while researching opportunities in other sectors like corporate social responsibility and impact investing. The Development Director will lead the organization’s foundation fundraising, including the production of grant applications and reports, identification of foundation prospects through research, building new relationships with foundations and nurturing existing ones. They will also work closely with the rest of the team to build a membership program and plan annual digital fundraising campaigns.

Our ideal candidate will have a background in development and an interest in the worlds of journalism and immigration. Familiarity with donor databases and other fundraising technology is helpful. Documented has a small team, we each wear many hats and value flexibility and creativity. The successful candidate will enjoy working with the team to build a fundraising program that supports Documented’s increasingly important role in the media landscape. Previous experience in media is not required. We will encourage the director to become immersed in the world of nonprofit journalism by building relationships with other organizations and attending (virtual) journalism conferences.

We highly value lived experiences in the issues we cover as a news organization. We also understand the difficult work realities due to the pandemic and are open to accommodating people with different work requirements.

This is an opportunity to help shape the future of a young, growing organization in a sector that many believe is the future of journalism.

This role would be a one-year contract with the intention to extend based on funding. The salary for this role would be $60–65,000. A healthcare stipend and four weeks paid time off are provided. Eventually, we hope to be able to return to our office in Brooklyn full-time, but as of now, the position will be largely remote.

To apply for this role, please email a resume and cover letter to mazin.sidahmed@documentedny.com or max.siegelbaum@documentedny.com by August 29th, 2020.
