KGOU public radio is looking for an energetic reporter who likes chasing stories, solving mysteries and meeting new people to produce the station’s signature podcast and features that engage our diverse audience. We are an NPR member station looking for a reporter with a conversational on-air sound, inquisitive mind, sharp news instincts and strong storytelling skills who likes connecting with communities of interesting people and finding stories nobody else even considered.

The successful candidate will lead the station’s outreach efforts into diverse and often underserved communities and produce the popular How Curious podcast that explores myths, legends, oddities and personalities across the state. This full-time position will use digital and engagement tools, networking and first-person conversations to produce memorable stories in multi-media formats and special projects that are culturally-aware, make a difference and stand out from the crowd.

Our newsroom has won many awards, including ten Oklahoma Associated Press Sweepstakes/Outstanding News Operation Awards and five regional Edward R. Murrow Awards. This new Engagement Reporter will create content that will involve our audience and break new ground. The successful candidate will need to be collaborative, strategic, innovative, engaging and ready to travel. This reporter may also be called on occasionally to cover breaking news, file national spot news, host a program or special event, and imagine new editorial directions.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, political science or other appropriate field;
  • Two years of journalism experience, or some equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience with web posting, social media, photography, audio and video content gathering and editing;
  • Great time management and organization skills, including reliability, punctuality and critical thinking;
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills, strong writing skills and knowledge of AP style.

This is a full-time position with regular hours expected to be Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Occasional work after hours or on weekends should be expected. This person must be able to travel and walk long distances while carrying equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Salary is commensurate with skills and experience, with University of Oklahoma benefits.
