Alabama Media Group is seeking an experienced, enterprising reporter to produce work that changes lives, laws and minds in Alabama. This reporter will work for Reckon and to uncover and explore the divides that shape and separate our society, looking at all manner of disparities between rural and urban, gaps in access to medical care, gaps in online access, differences in housing. The beat will explore race, class, gender issues and much more in a state where reporting often leads to rapid change and policy adjustments. Our hope is that by exploring the unfairness that divides us, we will find ways to better understand one another.

We are looking for a reportewho is comfortable with data requests and analysis, but more importantly this reporter will need to use storytelling to walk Alabama through how this data influences daily life and why such disparities matter. Our primary lens is Alabama, and this is a statewide position, based in Birmingham, the largest metro in Alabama. However, we are increasingly involved in regional and national coverage. No story is too big, and Alabama itself is often at the extremes of many the divides we see throughout the western world.

Help Alabama figure out how to do better. The right candidate will have experience in investigative reporting, records requests, data reporting, engagement and telling stories in ways that drive audience. This is a new beat for Alabama Media Group and a creative reporter will generate story ideas we cannot anticipate. The beat will be located within the seven-member investigative team at and Reckon.

Much of the work will also appear on Reckon our social news brand, which focuses on conversation, solutions and reader engagement. Work also will be published on the state’s largest news site as well as in the newspaper in the state’s three largest metro areas. This reporter will also need to be open to collaboration both within Reckon and, and with national media partners.

Applications should include links to examples of work you believe best shows why you would be the right fit for this job. Please include resume, cover letter, and links to clips.
