American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has  an exciting opportunity for an Interactive Graphics Editor to join our Science Visuals team. Reporting to the Graphics Managing Editor, you will work to create visual pieces that illustrate complex scientific, technological, and geosocial concepts for Science News and the Science Family of Journals. We’re looking for a strong front-end developer with a solid understanding of information design and data visualization. What You’ll Do

  • Research and develop interactive data visualizations and information graphics
  • Adapt and create static data visualizations and graphics for online and print
  • Analyze complex data-sets to find patterns, trends and narratives applicable to visualizations
  • Participate in the planning and design of interactive pieces with editors and sources
  • Collaborate with Producers to promote our work on the website and social networks
  • Additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 2+ years of experience building data-driven charts, maps, and 3D modeling
  • 2+ years of experience designing for the web and mobile devices
  • Fluent HTML, CSS, JS and libraries such as D3, Jquery, react-d3
  • Knowledge of web and UX design applied to digital graphics and interactives
  • Knowledge of statistical data visualization
  • Good command of Adobe CC (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Ability to visualize complex ideas in a clear, accurate, and intelligent manner
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and a good communicator
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced and demanding work environment with tight deadlines
  • Ability to handle several projects simultaneously, including long-term and daily assignments
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently
  • Basic knowledge or familiarity with of other coding languages such as Python or R
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Software such as QGIS
  • Good eye and basic design and typographic skills
  • Fast learner, eager to acquire new techniques and knowledge
  • Solid grounding in basic science education, intellectual curiosity about science, or comfort with scientific ideas is essential
