WMTV, the NBC-affiliate in Madison, Wis., has an immediate opening on our award-winning news team for an experienced Investigative Reporter. This position requires initiative and take chargeability, you will work independently and as a team to take our daily reporting and long-term projects to the next level. You have the unique opportunity to join the NBC15 family as we re-establish our commitment to investigative journalism and producing original content. In addition to turning in-depth, promotable content, the perfect person for this job will embrace day-turn reporting. You will be expected to verify facts and develop investigative angles to the news of day, find the stories behind press releases, and front breaking news and live content from the field and our News Now Desk.
Work with the News Director to coach other team members on responsible and thoughtful investigative workflows and best practices. We are not a “gotcha” newsroom or market.
Ensure a daily, and multi-dimensional investigative presence in newscasts and all digital platforms (NBC15.com, social media, our news app and OTT).
Execute a daily digital plan tailored to your assignment and long-term projects. This includes identifying opportunities for live streaming on our website and Facebook, getting live and user-generated content to our News Now Desk, and sending “recruit to view” push alerts.
Write and post copy daily on all digital platforms, including NBC15.com, as new information is learned.
Understand our DMA, key target audiences and where they live.
Develop sources within the community to gain unique, “Only On” insight and reports on important and impactful issues.
Work with assignment desk and ND on long-form projects and planning, and day-turn stories (with a photographer and/or as an MMJ)
A college degree in journalism or related field, and at least two or more years of newsroom experience. Experience in reviewing legal/court documents, FOIA and submitting open records requests to obtain information a must.
A strong candidate will have experience with data journalism, know their way around a courthouse, and have an established and responsible presence on digital platforms, including station website, social media and OTT.
Understanding of and adherence to AP Style (on digital platforms) and broadcast writing for television.
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), proven news judgement, ethics and integrity.
Strong work ethic, organizational and leadership skills. Must be able to work quickly, make deadlines, multi-task and show composure, especially during breaking news.
Ability to work long hours, weekends, and overnights as needed for breaking news and specialized coverage.
Must be able to carry 35+ pounds of gear, and be experienced in shooting and editing unique content.
Must have a desire to win, the ability to reflect on your work and apply feedback.
