The Pulitzer Prize Board annually awards 22 prizes in journalism, arts, and letters. In addition, the Board provides study fellowships to young journalists and hosts seminars on Pulitzer Prize–winning journalism to broaden and deepen public understanding of journalistic excellence and its value to democracy and civic life.

The Administrator supports the Board in its awarding of the prizes and safeguards and enhances the integrity of the prizes through oversight of all stages of the process. The Administrator supports the Board’s ongoing effort to identify significant trends and issues that might prompt changes in the Plan of Award or other rules, guidelines, or procedures. The Administrator oversees ongoing efforts to keep the website (Pulitzer.org) dynamic and to capture Pulitzer history in a user-friendly archive. Often serving as the spokesperson for the Board, the Administrator reflects the mission of the Pulitzer Prizes and executes the overall strategic plan as directed by the Board.

The Administrator reports to the Board Chair and to the President of Columbia University.

Responsibilities:

The Administrator’s specific responsibilities will include:

  • supervising the Pulitzer process, including managing the entry process and working with the Board to recruit, coach, and monitor high-quality juries
  • organizing Board meetings and the annual award luncheon; and supporting the work of standing and ad hoc Board committees
  • answering inquiries about policies and practices from the press and the public and amplifying the mission of the Pulitzers to a broad audience
  • executing the Board’s overall strategic plan
  • supporting the Board’s ongoing effort to identify significant trends and issues that might prompt changes in the Plan of Award or other rules, guidelines, or procedures
  • overseeing efforts to expand the Pulitzer’s public presence through its website, social media presence, and other means
  • managing Pulitzer study fellowships to young journalists and hosting of seminars on Pulitzer Prize–winning journalism in order to broaden and deepen public understanding of journalistic excellence
  • responsibly overseeing a small staff and a $1 million annual budget

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of eight years of related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a vigorous advocate for the Pulitzer Prizes. Candidates must demonstrate keen understanding of journalistic excellence and be highly attuned to the shifting media landscape, including challenges facing local news providers, the emergence of nonprofit media organizations, and increasing collaborations among news organizations. Candidates will also have genuine interest in, meaningful exposure to, and experience with contemporary arts and letters. In addition, the successful candidate will have proven success as a leader with administrative responsibility. Extraordinary communication and interpersonal skills are critical. Evidence of sound judgment and even temperament in a highly sensitive environment are required.
