The hands-on workshops at last year's conference blew me away, and I hope to leave Louisville with exposure to new tools I can put to use in the newsroom. Although technology is always changing and this year's tools may soon be obsolete, there are some skills workshops I don't want to miss.
My NICAR goal is to grasp Django well enough to pitch and lead a feasible newsroom project. The four Python sessions should help.
Northwestern friends and I are known to #RallyForR, so expect to see us with pom poms listening to Amanda Cox. I'm also hoping to learn howjavascript libraries can help me design information for the web.

There's a lot to choose from at CAR. So we asked a variety of journalists -- students, beat reporters, veteran data crunchers and programmers -- to tell us what they're excited about this year.
I'm lost when it comes to serving apps online, so I'm glad there are panels on getting started in the cloud and serving mad traffic.
I'm excited my colleagues from the Knight Lab at Northwestern University are presenting on mobile design and, y'know, the future of journalism.
I'm also looking forward to "From CAR to news apps and back again" and what the panelists have to say about challenges in merging technology and journalism.
Most of all I can't wait to meet with friends and hack out our data challenges together. My laptop will be on hand at all times.
