Businesses leave data footprints everywhere - from SEC filings to health and safety inspections on regulators' web sites. Learn how to dig through data and use it to surface stories that are sitting on hundreds of databases waiting for you to find  them. We'll walk through the basic steps with live examples to show you how to get started, taking you from source to story to graphics. We will highlight some stories derived from these data sources.

Speaker Bios

  • Andrea Fuller is a reporter for The Wall Street Journal in New York City who specializes in data analysis. She uses spreadsheets, databases, and computer code to find stories. Ms. Fuller joined the Journal in April 2014. She previously was a data journalist at Gannett Digital, The Center for Public Integrity, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. 

  • John W. Schoen is an award-winning online journalist who has reported and written about economics and financial news for more than 30 years. He is currently a data reporter for CNBC Digital and has taught online journalism at Columbia University’s School of Journalism. @johnwschoen
