Spotlight: Using abstraction to gain knowledge from numbers
Visualizations are abstractions—graphical representations of quantities and concepts. Effective graphics are the result of carefully chosen abstractions, and often rely on transforming the underlying data to maximize the strengths and mitigate the weaknesses of our visual system.
Robert Simmon is a data visualizer and designer at Planet Labs. With 20 years experience at NASA, he is an expert at creating clear and compelling imagery from satellite data. He focuses on producing visualizations that are elegant and easily understandable, while accurately presenting the underlying data. The Earth at Night and the 2002 Blue Marble have become two of NASA’s most popular visualizations. @rsimmon
