We'll give representatives of four online services a chance to show off how they can help your reporting. The mostly-free tools include:

*Panjiva brings transparency to global trade, with insight on the activities of 5 million companies that do business across international borders.

*Sqoop helps reporters unlock stories from public records site like the SEC, federal courts and Patent Office.

*Zillow: Download, explore and visualize more than 50 housing metrics -- for free -- at all geographic levels, and use the data to tell stories about poverty, affordability, growth, and more.

*Kumu: Powerful tools for visualizing relationships and unravelling complex stories.

Speaker Bios

  • Jaimi Dowdell is a data journalist for Reuters. Previously she was training director for Investigative Reporters and Editors and data editor for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. @JaimiDowdell

  • Bill Hankes is the founder and CEO of Sqoop, a news discovery service for journalists. Before that he was a longtime communications executive most recently serving as Director of Bing Public Relations at Microsoft and Vice President of Corporate Communications for RealNetworks. Bill spoke about the challenges reporters face accessing public data at the 2015 IRE conference in Philadelphia and in January at SABEW government data workshop in Washington, D.C. @bhankes

  • Domila McFarlane is the Enterprise Success Manager at Panjiva. Working at one of the most innovative global trade databases puts her in contact with all industries involved or interested in international trade. In her current role she supports clients as they use the database for business development, market analysis, and international trade research. She received a B.A. in English from Yale University and her J.D. from Loyola Chicago School of Law. @panjiva

  • Jeff Mohr is cofounder & CEO of Kumu, a platform for visualizing relationships and unravelling complex stories. Kumu helps the world's top influencers turn ideas into impact through a creative blend of systems thinking, stakeholder mapping, and social network analysis. @jeffcmohr @kumupowered

  • Skylar joined Zillow in 2012. Her research is used by consumers, policy makers, and other researchers to understand the real estate markets and make better decisions. While authoring numerous research projects, she also creates many of Zillow’s real estate metrics, including the Buyer-Seller Index and Buy-Rent Breakeven Horizon. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Washington and specializes in the spatial patterns of housing and demographic change.
