What types of challenges do advocates for open data within the government have to struggle through, and what can we do as journalists to help the process along? Learn about what champions for open data working with or within government agencies have accomplished so far, what they're excited about, and what things (big and small) journalists can do to help improve open data.

Speaker Bios

  • Sisi Wei is the Director of Programs at OpenNews, where she envisions and executes transformative initiatives for journalism, especially for journalists of color and local journalists. Previously, she was Assistant Managing Editor at ProPublica where she oversaw and edited news apps, graphics, visual reporting, and investigations. 

  • Rebecca Williams is an information policy analyst with a background in law and city planning. She currently works as a Digital Services Expert at the White House Office of Management and Budget Office of the Chief Information Office focused on IT Modernization, Data Governance, and Digital Identity Management. Rebecca has also worked on the Bloomberg What Works Cities initiative, Data.gov, and the Sunlight Foundation on data access issues. @internetrebecca

  • Lindsay Young helps make the government more accountable working as a web developer at 18F. She is teaming with the FEC to create the FEC's first API and beta.fec.gov. An advocate for open data, she says her work "combines [her] love for making data-driven web apps with a passion for disclosure." Lindsay teaches Python for Johns Hopkins' Master’s program. Before 18F, Lindsay spent five years as an investigative reporter & developer at the Sunlight Foundation. @not_young
