Add statistical heft to your reporting by using R, a free, powerful open-source programming language. This session will tackle the basics of R while exploring New Orleans census data. In addition to learning more about IRE's host city, you'll be importing data, installing packages, working with variables, and sorting and organizing your data.

This session is good for: People comfortable working with code, people with basic data knowledge.

Speaker Bios

  • Ryan Menezes works on the Los Angeles Times Data Desk, where he analyzes data, writes stories, crafts visualizations and tackles various problems with the help of code. @ryanvmenezes

  • Christine Zhang is a data journalist at The Baltimore Sun, where she reports news stories using data analysis and statistics. Before joining The Sun in 2018, she worked as a data scientist at Two Sigma and was previously an OpenNews fellow at the Los Angeles Times and a research analyst at the Brookings Institution. She has a B.A. from Smith College and an M.A. from Columbia University.
