Speaker Bios

  • Valérie Ouellet is CBC's senior data journalist in Toronto. She uses data analysis, computer coding and GIS mapping to uncover exclusive stories. Her recent work includes revealing large-scale tickets scalping, investigating questionable inmate deaths and documenting a rise of violence in nursing homes. She has collaborated with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) on two investigations. She teaches at Ryerson University and Humber College.

  • Michael Pereira is an award-winning developer and data journalist who creates and uses tools to tell stories with impact. Previous work has uncovered issues in healthcare, pipeline and rail safety, government spending, state surveillance, missing and murdered indigenous women, elections, the Olympics, and breaking news events. Michael is currently an Interactive Editor at the Globe and Mail, previously he was an Interactive Developer at CBC News.
