This session is designed for journalists who have mastered the basics of Excel and want to take their skills further with advanced functions, cleaning techniques and data importing methods.

Speaker Bios

  • Alex is an assistant professor at Syracuse University's Newhouse School, where he teaches data journalism. He's a former IRE training director, and he has previously worked as a reporter and editor at the Chicago Tribune, NerdWallet, The Chronicle of Higher Education and the Las Vegas Sun, where he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2011 and shared the Goldsmith Prize for investigative reporting. @alexrichards

  • Fred is an author and professor at the University of King's College. He teaches data and investigative reporting, and research methods. Prior to joining King's, he was a reporter and editor with the CBC and the Hamilton Spectator. He has won many awards, including the 1996 IRE award for radio. He is most proud of the many award nominations earned by his students. Fred keeps moving on skis, his bike and his feet. He loves best his time with his wife and four daughters.
