Over the past 20 years, the immigration story has expanded well beyond the border zones of the United States and deep into the country’s interior. This panel will offer tips and advice on covering immigration when you live far from a border zone. We’ll talk about techniques for finding people to write about and how to cover stepped-up immigration enforcement. We’ll also offer some basic background on the immigration system in the U.S. and share personal experiences with immigration authorities.


Speaker Bios

  • Aubrey Aden-Buie is a senior producer at Glassbreaker Films from The Center for Investigative Reporting. She is also the creator and director of BridgeUp:Film, an after school program for high school girls. She was named one of Cynopsis Media's Top Women in Digital in 2016 for her coverage of what life is like for refugees coming to the US, and has worked in communities around the globe, using video journalism as a tool to bring about social change. @aubreyadenbuie

  • Daniel Connolly has covered immigration for 15+ years and wrote a critically acclaimed narrative nonfiction work on Hispanic youth, “The Book of Isaias: A child of Hispanic immigrants seeks his own America.” He has also written extensively on the intersection between business and government and has collaborated with Pulitzer Prize-winning organizations including The Marshall Project and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. @DanielConnolly

  • Mir Wais Jalalzai, Afghan Reporter, Producer and journalist who covers mostly conflict and corruption related issues and contributes to TRT TV, DW Radio and Kabul Press. Several stories of Jalalzai have been published in National and international newspapers and online media. Jalalzai is an out spoken journalist who wrote about corruption, war, involvement of governmental officials in drug and human trafficking as well about the human abuse by Warlords.
