This diverse panel of experts will explore how the realm of big data, particularly geographic data, poses opportunities and challenges for today’s newsrooms. Are newsrooms and journalists ready for the growth of geographic and location-based data that will impact how news can be told and received? This panel will answer this question by addressing the nuances of coding geographic and location-based data for a variety of contexts from app and CMS development to story presentation; the challenges in analyzing big datasets that are geographic or location-based in nature; and the overall geodata mindset needed in journalism today. Attendees will also come away with a handout of tips and techniques related to working in this geo-context.

Speaker Bios

  • Victor Hernandez is a digital journalism strategist and industry thought leader with keen eyes and full attention focused on the big picture of the rapidly changing news economy. Currently working closely with news media startups on strategic initiatives and product development, Hernandez brings more than two decades of professional experience from leading-edge newsrooms, journalism education programs, and technology startups. 

  • Stephen Jefferson is the founder of Bloom, providing solutions for local newsrooms to leverage geolocation for content distribution and personalization. In 2016, he concluded a fellowship at Tow-Knight's Entrepreneurial Journalism program in NYC. Previously, he has developed software for community-based businesses and non-profits throughout the DC metropolitan area.

  • Joe Yerardi is a data reporter at the Center for Public Integrity in Washington. In this role, he's investigated everything from the influence pharmaceutical companies wield over Medicaid programs' drug purchasing decisions to the environmental destruction abandoned coal mines wreak on Appalachia. Before joining the Center, Joe covered a wide range of beats as the data reporter at (San Diego) inewsource and as the data editor at the San Antonio Express-News. @JoeYerardi.
