QGIS 1: Importing and displaying geographic data

Not all datasets need to be mapped, but some do! This mapping class is perfect for beginners looking to learn the basics of visualizing geographic data. We'll go over how to find publicly available data, prepare it for mapping, join datasets and use the open-source mapping software, QGIS.

This session is good for: People who have geographic data in a spreadsheet or file that they would like to plot on a map.

Speaker Bios

  • Christine Jeavans is a senior data journalist at BBC News, with a focus on public data. Chris has been using QGIS since 2013 and has conducted mapping training workshops previously at Nicar. She received a Royal Statistical Society award for a project mapping jihadist attacks across the world. @chrisjeavans

  • John Walton is the data journalism editor at BBC News. He has been using QGIS for map making since 2013. John has previously held mapping workshops at Nicar and the Graphical Web conference. He has also contributed a chapter to the recently published book, Data Journalism: Past, Present and Future. @walt_jw
