We will navigate the murky industry of foreign lobbying, explore the world of “Dark Money” in political nonprofits, help you uncover the “New Dark Money” filtering into the president’s pockets and show you a burgeoning new form of Astroturf lobbying that’s flooding government websites to influence decision-makers.


Speaker Bios

  • James Grimaldi is a senior writer on the investigative desk at The Wall Street Journal. A former IRE president, he now serves on the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. He won a Pulitzer in 2006 and has won many other awards, including an IRE FOI award in 2010 and a Dirksen award from the National Press Foundation in 2018. He previously worked for The Washington Post, Seattle Times, Orange County Register and San Diego Tribune. He is based in Washington, D.C. 

  • Andy Lehren is senior editor for the NBC News investigative team. Previously at The New York Times. Led NBC’s work on the Implant Files collaboration. Mined the Snowden files. Probed Wikileaks diplomatic cables troves, including for the best-selling book “Open Secrets.” Covered the military, policing. terrorism, more. Honors include a Polk, Peabody, three IRE awards and contributing to a Pulitzer. Specializes in data journalism. Teaches  @cunyjschool. @lehrennbc

  • Megan Luther is an investigative producer with InvestigateTV, Gray Television's national investigative team. Previously, she was IRE's Senior Training Director and a data analyst for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Megan, mother of two, works remotely in South Dakota. @MeganLuther

  • Momi Peralta Ramos is data journalism project manager at La Nación, from Argentina. She is a Computer Scientist and MBA. Since 2011 she leads a team and a project of Open Data Journalism named La Nación Data, that includes developing data-driven journalism, open collaboration and open data in a country that recently passed its FOI law. Besides data journalism her interests are in applying technology and data science to discover and tell stories for social impact.
