Speaker Bios

  • Kim Barker: Reporter at The New York Times, focusing on housing (at this point). Formerly a campaign-finance reporter and foreign correspondent. @kim_barker

  • Vernal Coleman is a reporter with the Seattle Times' Project Homeless, a grant-funded initiative that examines homelessness, poverty, housing and the regional response to them. Vernal joined The Seattle Times in 2016 after working for two years at the Star-Ledger in New Jersey, where he covered breaking news, public safety and city politics. @vernalcoleman

  • Kae Petrin covers transit, housing and miscellanea as a digital reporter for St. Louis Public Radio. They work across genres and mediums but spend much of their time with data analysis, public records and data visualization. Kae won the 2019 Missouri Broadcasters Association award for Convergent Media. They have a bachelor’s from Washington University in St. Louis and a programming certificate from LaunchCode.   • Ray Rivera is Managing Editor at The Seattle Times. He is a former staff reporter for The New York Times and The Washington Post and was the executive editor of the Santa Fe New Mexican.  He is also the founder and chairman of Searchlight New Mexico, a nonprofit news organization. He lives in Seattle with his wife and three children.
