Speaker Bios

  • Erica Byfield is an Emmy award winning general assignment reporter for WNBC-TV in New York City. She joined News 4 New York in September 2016. Prior to that she spent nearly 6 years working for WSB-TV in Atlanta as an investigative and general assignment reporter. She also worked for KMOV in St. Louis, MO and for KFVS in Cape Girardeau, MO. Awards for her work include several regional Emmy awards, two regional Edward R Murrow awards and she was an IRE medal finalist. @ericabyfield4ny

  • Francisco Vara-Orta is a training director at the Investigative Reporters & Editors, Inc. He brings nearly 20 years of newsroom experience, published by a variety of news organizations, including Chalkbeat, Education Week, the San Antonio Express-News, Austin Business Journal, Los Angeles Business Journal and the Los Angeles Times. He earned a master’s degree in investigative/data journalism at Mizzou & a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.
