As charter schools and private schools accepting vouchers become more prevalent around the country, journalists have exposed issues such as fraud, mismanagement, poor accountability, political lobbying connections and discriminatory admissions practices. This panel will give you the tools you need to investigate charter schools and other school choice options in your city or state.

Speaker Bios

  • Shaina Cavazos is a reporter for Chalkbeat Indiana, where she primarily covers state education policy. Recently, her work has focused on virtual charter schools and gaps in their oversight. She's written for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Columbia Missourian, and her work has appeared in The Atlantic. She holds a master’s degree in journalism and bachelor's degrees in journalism and economics from the University of Missouri. @ShainaRC

  • Rose Ciotta: EdSource associate editor; former reporter & editor, Philadelphia Inquirer, co-edited “Assault on Learning,” on school violence that won 2012 Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for Public Service; investigative producer, WIVB, Buffalo; won two Edward R. Murrow Regional Awards; former IRE board member; Knight Journalism Fellow, Stanford University; awarded Jim Bettinger News Innovation Award in 2017 for Investigative Editing Corps linking editors with small local newsrooms.

  • Arianna Prothero is a reporter for Education Week where she covers the politics and policy of school choice. She previously worked as a reporter and anchor for WLRN, the NPR member station in Miami, Fla., and WFIU, the NPR affiliate in Bloomington, Ind. @AriannaProthero
