Speaker Bios

  • DCReport co-founder, Trump biographer and bestselling author teaching at Syracuse Law since 2009. Former IRE president; IRE medal for 2003 book Perfectly Legal. 2001 Pulitzer. NYT, LAT, Philly Inquirer, Detroit Free Press, SJ Mercury 1968-2008. Columnist Reuters, CJR, Tax Notes,Al Jazeera America, 2008-2016. Father of eight, grandfather of five. From Santa Cruz, Calif., living in Rochester NY since 1993. @DavidCayJ

  • Paula Lavigne has been an investigative reporter for ESPN since 2008, working for both digital and TV. She has a background in data journalism. Her work has been recognized with several awards including a Peabody, duPont and IRE's first sports investigation award. Prior to ESPN, she worked at newspapers in Dallas; Des Moines, Iowa; and Tacoma, Wash. She is a graduate of the University of Nebraska and Creighton University.   

  • Maya Rao is the author of "Great American Outpost: Dreamers, Mavericks and the Making of an Oil Frontier," a narrative nonfiction book about the North Dakota oilfield published in April 2018 by Public Affairs/Hachette. The book explores the largest oil rush in modern U.S. history. She is currently a D.C. correspondent for the Minneapolis Star Tribune and has been published in Longreads, the Atlantic,  Philadelphia Inquirer, Houston Chronicle, and the Awl.
