This class will cover basic approaches for getting text out of PDF documents using powerful and freely available tools. Participants will be introduced to basic concepts and walked through tackling common challenges encountered with tricky PDF documents.

This session is good for: People who are unfamiliar with PDF-to-text tools or would like to learn how these tools can be used for extracting difficult text from images embedded in a PDF document.

Speaker Bios

  • Caitlin Ostroff graduated in May from the University of Florida with a dual degree in journalism and political science. She worked for The Independent Florida Alligator, a student-run paper serving the university and Gainesville, Florida community. While there, she helped start the #SaveStudentNewsrooms initiative, which aims to discuss issues facing student-run papers and find solutions. She's currently a Data Reporter for McClatchy's DC Bureau, based at the Miami Herald.
