Women in journalism meetup
This session will be an off-the-record discussion about being a woman in journalism. Some topics we'll bring up will include: negotiating your pay and the pay gap, balancing family and work, challenges and advice on climbing the ladder, dealing with sexist accusations about your reporting and pushing back when you know you have a good story.
Jenifer McKim is the senior investigative reporter for the New England Center for Investigative Reporting based out of WBGH News and Boston University. She investigates criminal justice, child welfare and other topics for print, digital and broadcast. Her investigations have earned numerous awards, including the national Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism and a finalist nod for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service.
Kavya Sukumar is a developer-journalist at Hearken working on tech for the audience engagement space. She was an Opennews fellow in 2015 and has worked at Vox.com and The Palm Beach Post. Follow her @kavyaSukumar.
Nicole works as the Director of Investigative Journalism for KUSA, 9NEWS in Denver, CO and with TEGNA. Her team won a national Edward R. Murrow award along with a Sigma Delta Chi award in 2018 for their Show Us Your Bills series that exposed inappropriate medical bills sent to people in their community. Nicole has also won a Columbia duPont baton and numerous other awards. She is an IRE Board member and serves on the board's executive committee.
