Technology & Tools Track: Making data investigations shine on multiple platforms
Investigators often have a ton of numbers and details that can be tough to make simple enough to understand and visually stunning enough to grab an audience's attention. Using on-air and digital examples, panelists will walk attendees step-by-step through the decisions to use certain formats, creative ideas and different platforms/tools to highlight all that digging and elevate its importance in a story.
Darla Cameron is the data visuals editor at The Texas Tribune in Austin, where she leads a team of developers at the intersection of graphics and news applications. Previously, she was a graphics editor at The Washington Post. She began her career in Florida at the Tampa Bay Times after completing a fellowship at the Poynter Institute. Darla is a Colorado native with a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri.
Gabriel Dance is the deputy investigations editor for The New York Times. He primarily focuses on investigations into technology and the companies that control our information. @gabrieldance
Josh Hinkle is KXAN’s Director of Investigations & Innovation, leading the station’s duPont and IRE Award-winning investigative team on multiple platforms. He also leads KXAN’s political coverage as the executive producer and host of “State of Texas,” a weekly program focused on the Texas Legislature and elections, seen in 14 markets statewide. @hinklej
