Battling for public records
Advice on crafting rock-solid records requests and proven strategies for following up and handling common roadblocks to getting the documents and data you need.
Duane Bosworth is chair of the media law group at the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine in Portland. For more than 30 years he has represented newspaper and broadcast newsrooms in all facets of the law, including access to public records and public meetings. He is on the board of Open Oregon, an organization dedicated to transparency in government. He is also a frequent presenter on access to public records and meetings and has worked with the Oregon Newspaper Association and the state Attorney General on revisions to access laws.
Jason Leopold is an Emmy nominated investigative reporter for BuzzFeed News. He is a member of the team that was named a 2018 Pulitzer finalist in international reporting and a recipient of this year's Tom Renner award from IRE. He was awarded the FOI award from IRE and was inducted into the National Freedom of Information Hall of Fame by the Newseum Institute. Politico has referred to him as “perhaps the most prolific Freedom of Information requester.”
