The right attitude can go a long way. In this session, you will get advice on developing a "documents and data" state of mind, understanding information flow through organizations you cover and becoming familiar with key national data sets to produce high-impact local stories.

Speaker Bios

  • Ziva leads a team at The Washington Post focused on business investigations and enterprise. She previously worked as a senior editor at Reveal and spent more than 20 years at the Tulsa World, where she and Cary Aspinwall were 2015 finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in local reporting. That same year, they founded The Frontier, an independent investigative newsroom in Tulsa. Ziva is serving her third term as an IRE board member.

  • Jason Leopold is an Emmy nominated investigative reporter for BuzzFeed News. He is a member of the team that was named a 2018 Pulitzer finalist in international reporting and a recipient of this year's Tom Renner award from IRE. He was awarded the FOI award from IRE and was inducted into the National Freedom of Information Hall of Fame by the Newseum Institute. Politico has referred to him as “perhaps the most prolific Freedom of Information requester.”
