Watchdog stories pose special challenges, including how best to prep for interviews, approach sources, handle tough situations, navigate ethical trouble-spots and more. Learn how to master the interview to hold your sources accountable. Seasoned watchdog journalists also will provide tips on preventing your sources from hijacking and controlling the interview.

Speaker Bios

  • Marisa Kwiatkowski is an investigative reporter for USA TODAY. She handles investigations relating to social services and children. Marisa has earned more than 50 awards, including the 2019 Louis M. Lyons Award for Conscience and Integrity in Journalism, IRE's Tom Renner Award, a Sigma Delta Chi Award in public service and Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. She previously worked for media outlets in Indiana, South Carolina and Michigan. @IndyMarisaK

  • Duane Pohlman has been named Best Reporter/Journalist nine times in five states, including 2019 when AP honored him named him Best Reporter in Ohio. He has received more than one hundred national, regional and state awards for his investigative reporting.  Duane iWorks at WKRC-TV, where his stories are distributed to Sinclair stations in Ohio and across the country.  He is a former IRE board member and current president of the Ohio Center for Investigative Journalism.
  • Mike Rezendes is a former investigative reporter with The Boston Globe Spotlight Team and shared a 2003 Pulitzer Prize for revealing the cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. Mike was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist twice, once for an investigation of the debt collection industry, and more recently for an exposé of the mental health care system in Massachusetts. In 2015, he was played by Mark Ruffalo in the Academy Award-winning movie, “Spotlight.”
