Speaker Bios

  • Andrew Becker is the executive editor for special projects at KUER/NPR Utah. Previously, he reported on border, homeland and national security issues, most recently for The Center for Investigative Reporting. His reporting has appeared in national news outlets, including The New York Times, Washington Post, NPR and PBS/FRONTLINE. He has taught investigative reporting at the University of Utah, and won fellowships from John Jay College and the University of California, Berkeley. @BeckerReports

  • Gillian Friedman is an award-winning investigative reporter for the Deseret News. In June, she will join The New York Times as the 2020-21 David Carr Fellow and a reporter for business. Gillian’s reporting on underrepresented minorities - including refugees, immigrants and survivors of sexual violence - has been appeared in by news outlets across the globe, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Jerusalem Post, and The Times of Israel. She graduated summa cum laude from Whitman College in 2016 with a B.A. in Race and Ethnic Studies. @gillianreporter
