Learn how to use federal and state open records laws to draft records requests the right way. We'll discuss ways to challenge denials and keep a steady flow of information coming into the newsroom with FOI.

Speaker Bios

  • A veteran investigative reporter and an editor, AmyJo Brown has held local politicians and nonprofits accountable in local newsrooms around the country, at publications of all types — among them the East Oregonian in the cowboy country of Oregon, the statewide Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and Pittsburgh’s alt-weekly, the City Paper. She is currently the project editor for the Pittsburgh Media Partnership, a new collaborative of 20 local news organizations. @amyjo_brown

  • Paula Knudsen is the investigations and enterprise editor for LNP | LancasterOnline. She is also a contributing writer for The Caucus. A licensed attorney, Paula provides training and advice in the newsroom and beyond related to public records and open government challenges. She is a former director of legal affairs for the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association. When she’s not ferreting out government waste, Paula can be found with her husband coaching youth rugby.

  • Rich started at PublicSource as the economic development reporter/editor in January. Prior to that, he spent 14 1/2 years in a variety of roles at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. There, he was part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team that reported on the Tree of Life massacre, and led projects on child poverty, the opioid epidemic and the special interests influencing city government. Rich has also worked for the City Paper and the Tribune-Review.
