Design is key to attracting attention, keeping the public engaged and even getting people to do what you ask of them.

We'll look at examples from the BBC, NPR and The New York Times and share tips and ideas on what you yourself can do to design and present brilliant stories.

Speaker Bios

  • Alyson Hurt is the graphics editor at NPR, serving on the Visuals team. Previously at The Washington Post and The Arizona Republic. Graduate of ASU's Cronkite School and Georgetown's CCT program. @alykat

  • Aron Pilhofer is the James B. Steele Chair in Journalism Innovation at Temple University. In addition to teaching, his work is focused on new business models, digital transformation and innovation in news. Before joining Temple, Pilhofer was Executive Editor, Digital, and interim Chief Digital Officer at the Guardian in London. Previously, he has been a reporter and editor at The New York Times, The Center for Public Integrity as well as Gannett newspapers in New Jersey and Delaware. Aron also co-founded two news-related startups: and Hacks & Hackers.

  • Helene Sears is a Senior Editorial Designer for BBC News Visual Journalism, a team which brings online and broadcast design together. Specialising in responsive design, her recent projects have ranged from a data project on NHS operations in the UK, to a collaboration with the Royal Veterinary College that tracked what cats get up to once they've left the cat flap. Her team aims to create graphics that are informative, accessible and, whenever possible, fun. @MateerS

  • Over the course of an intrepid career, Chrys Wu, a.k.a. MacDiva, has been a journalist, strategist, coder and consigliere to news media, tech companies, non-profits and foundations, including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, NPR and its affiliates, DataKind, The Knight Foundation and The Gates Foundation. She works at the intersection of communication, design and technology, solving problems for people at scale. @MacDiva
