Board Office Hours: Discuss proposed organizational changes

IRE is planning to make a few organizational changes, including creating a new category of membership for early-career journalists, whose membership dues will be less than other professional members. Join the IRE Board for a casual discussion about the changes and share your input. As always during Board Office Hours, we'll also take any other questions you have.

Thousands of academic research papers get retracted each year, often because of ethics violations, data manipulation and other forms of research misconduct. Despite the immense impact bad research can have on public health and safety — and even though the U.S. government spends billions of dollars a year on research projects — few journalists monitor and report on research fraud and errors.

Let’s find ways to inform without hurting, to advocate without re-traumatizing, and to talk to people in pain that may help them heal — versus leaving more agony in our wake.

Over the course of four sessions, attendees will learn various tools and strategies for dealing with “dirty data”: messy values, typos, incorrect data types, bad formatting and unstructured data. The trainers will focus on free tools and techniques that require little to no coding, starting with functions and features in Google Sheets. Attendees will also get an introduction to the basics of some command line utilities; OpenRefine, which has powerful clustering algorithms for tackling messy values; and regular expressions, an incredibly powerful cleaning tool for unstructured data. The workshop uses real-world data examples and covers best practices and strategies for cleaning data. This bootcamp will take place 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. ET on the following days: April 16, April 18, April 23 and April 25.
