Online TV Watchdog Workshop: Digging deeper with data

IRE’s TV Watchdog Workshops are going virtual in 2021, allowing us to reach more journalists and keep everyone safe during the pandemic. These half-day workshops are open to all television journalists and will focus on tips and techniques for journalists working in television news.

Join us for a half-day workshop that will focus on using data for television investigations. We’ll discuss everything from finding data (and sometimes fighting to get it) to visualizing it for your audience.

IRE Membership Deal

The first 500 people to sign up for any of the workshops will get a free one-year IRE membership or renewal!

If you are already an IRE member, you'll receive a renewal after the workshop. If you are not a member, you'll receive a new membership after the event if you meet IRE membership requirements.

Each person can receive only one membership/renewal for the 2021 Virtual TV Watchdog Workshop series. Membership value is $70 for professionals and $25 for students.

12:10 - 1 pm ET | Getting in the data state of mind

Speaker: Josh Hinkle, KXAN-TV; PJ Randhawa, KSDK-TV

Data and documents are the backbone of investigative journalism, yet many TV journalists shy away from data because it feels too complex to tackle on our platform. Josh and PJ will show you that the task is not as daunting as you think. They’ll talk about how to get into that data state of mind and show you examples of how to successfully incorporate data into your investigation.

1 - 2 pm ET | My favorite data viz tools

Need a chart, map or other visualization to make your work stand out? Jamie and Charles will demo their favorite data visualization tools that anyone can use.

2:30 - 3:30 pm ET | How to negotiate for and obtain data

Speaker: Nicole Carr, WSB-TV; Tyler Dukes, The News and Observer

Sometimes you can just grab data off government websites, and while we will show you some examples of where to find it, not everything is on the internet. Nicole and Tyler team up to show how to figure out what your local government tracks using data, and how to get past roadblocks those government officials put up to keep you from obtaining the data.

Join us for a half-day workshop where we will focus on interviews and visualizing our investigating stories. Bring your ideas, thoughts and questions as we discuss how we’ve navigated the past year and brainstorm approaches for hitting the reset button for post-pandemic investigations.

Speaker: Erica Jorgensen, NBC Boston; Kerry Kavanaugh, Boston 25 News

Erica Jorgensen and Kerry Kavanaugh talk about how to handle emotional interviews. Survivors of traumatic events, or witnesses to those events, are not used to being in the limelight. Erica and Kerry will lead a discussion on strategies for obtaining an interview, how to handle the interview once you get it, and why to leave the door open for discussion after the interview airs.

1 - 2 pm ET | Accountability interviews

Speaker: Erica Byfield, WNBC New York, Jodie Fleischer, NBC4 Washington

Erica Byfield of WNYC, New York and Jodie Fleischer of WRC-TV, Washington D.C. lead a discussion on challenges around trying to hold officials accountable in the past year, what's worked and what hasn't, as well as how to move forward as we slowly inch closer to the pre-pandemic days.

Bigad Shaban and Josh Wade discuss how to make your investigative interviews and stories visual. We'll discuss how to shake off the last year of COVID-restricted reporting brainstorm strategies on taking your post-COVID TV investigations to the next level.

In this workshop, learn how to navigate legal issues in your newsroom from media lawyers at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. Attorneys will lead sessions on navigating public records laws, vetting your stories for libel and privacy issues before publication, and knowing your legal rights while covering protests.

1 - 2:30 pm ET | Vetting your own stories

Speakers: Sarah Matthews of Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP)

Vetting your own stories will help you lower your legal costs, and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press has a new guide to help you with that. We'll focus on the fair reporting privilege, libel and privacy, among other issues.

2:45 - 4 pm ET | Covering protests: Know your rights

Speakers: Shannon Jankowski of Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP)

Journalists have been assaulted, arrested, and had their reportering gear confiscated or damaged simply for doing their jobs during protests.This session will focus on the legal strategies you need to know when covering protests, how to minimize your risk of a run-in with police and how to deal with it if it does happen. We'll also break into groups to discuss incidents you or your colleagues have faced and brainstorm strategies on how it might have been avoided.

We’ll offer several sessions to improve your ability to produce watchdog and enterprise stories for broadcast as well as time to network with other attendees. Learn how to frame every story with a watchdog lens, master the art of pitching an investigative story, and get tips on how to request records when you only have 10 minutes.

Reporters and producers: Join this session to learn tried and true tips and tricks on how to get your boss to accept your pitch. Managers and editors: Join this session to learn how to wade through the pitch to get to the meat of the story and help guide your reporters from pitch to production to air.
