Chief Executive Officer

Job Summary

Chief Executive Officer
Reveal/The Center for Investigative Reporting
San Francisco Bay Area (Emeryville), CA

Reveal/The Center for Investigative Reporting (Reveal) empowers the public through investigative journalism and groundbreaking storytelling in order to spark action, improve lives, and protect our democracy.

The investigations we pursue and stories we tell hold the powerful accountable and uncover information that would otherwise remain hidden from the public —revealing injustices, exposing threats to public safety, protecting vulnerable communities, championing human rights, speaking out against environmental degradation, and shining light on fraud and waste of taxpayer funds.

Founded in 1977 as the nation’s first nonprofit investigative journalism organization, Reveal has developed a reputation for being among the most innovative, credible and relevant media organizations in the country. Our reporting ignites real-world change, from civil and criminal investigations to new laws and policies, the instigation of public discourse and solutions-oriented community action.

Reveal is nationally respected for setting the highest journalistic standards and for our approach to investigative reporting and collaboration. We partner with dozens of media organizations and prioritize impact and the public’s right to know over exclusivity. We publish our stories on our website and social media, as well as for print, television, radio/audio and film. We were the first nonprofit newsroom to launch an investigative public radio show and podcast, breaking new ground for our field and building a pathway to reach younger and more diverse audiences.

From prisons to protests, immigration to the environment, Reveal’s Peabody Award-winning weekly radio show and podcast goes deep into the pressing issues of our time. The show, hosted by Al Letson, reaches listeners across the country and the world. Whether it’s exposing Amazon’s abysmal workplace safety record, inequity in the juvenile justice system or exploitation at drug rehabs, Reveal connects with listeners through gripping and compassionate storytelling that helps drive real change.

Reveal produces ambitious video documentary projects that bring compelling investigative stories to large audiences through partnerships and co-productions with Netflix, ABC, PBS, Oxygen and others. Our short documentary “Heroin(e)” premiered on Netflix and was an Academy Award nominee. Our documentary videos have regularly been recognized for their excellence and impact; we have received national Emmy, Peabody and duPont Awards.

Reveal produces original reporting on issues of moral urgency presented through diverse storytelling forms designed to deeply engage readers. We also publish visually compelling data interactives that make public records and data more accessible. We transform our findings to reach audiences on emerging platforms. Reveal was a Pulitzer Prize finalist from 2018 to 2020.

Recent reporting includes:

Our first serial podcast, American Rehab, was the culmination of a multiyear, multiplatform reporting effort into rehabs that exploit the unpaid labor of their participants; the final digital story includes a directory to aid those hoping to avoid sending loved ones to these exploitative institutions.
Our sourcing inside immigrant shelters – and a public records lawsuit by Reveal – uncovered the stories of children languishing in detention for years.
We obtained leaked Amazon safety data, allowing us to establish that Amazon lied to Congress and the public about its safety record, while our sourcing among government scientists led to a leaked document exposing aggressive White House interference in the EPA’s assessment of a toxic chemical.
We tackled the federal crackdown on Black Lives Matter protesters, finding that most of the prosecutions relate to minor property crimes, while we deployed audio and photography to explore a history of public funding for Confederate monuments – and the movement to bring them down.
A collaboration with KQED in San Francisco and WLRN in Miami led to a deep dive into the Trump administration’s devolution of responsibility for the pandemic to state and local leaders, part of a rich body of COVID-19 coverage that includes reporting on hospitals, nursing homes and schools; farm, grocery and warehouse workers; federal aid and federal detention, all brought to life through deeply reported podcast segments and digital stories.
