Job Summary

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is hiring a Data & Graphics Editor to join our Central News Department in Prague, the Czech Republic.

You will be reporting and producing data-visual content in a highly respected global media organization in a complex geopolitical climate. As a designer and developer of interactives and newsroom tools, you will be responsible for running and maintaining tools, code repositories and hosting workflows.

This role is an exciting opportunity to participate in and lead projects to find and tell amazing stories with journalists from across RFE/RL’s Language Services – producing everything from responsive graphics to videos, to long-form and interactive special projects. WHAT DOES THE ROLE ENTAIL?

Among other responsibilities you will:

  • Manage the activities of CN’s Digital team of visual journalists
  • Lead and participate in projects to find and process data and create unique visual content in collaboration with journalists from across RFE/RL’s Language Services and come up with creative new formats and ways of storytelling
  • Work with RFE/RL’s digital team on day-to-day and special digital initiatives and new content delivery strategies
  • Manage technical resources required to plan for, develop, deliver, and support frontend solutions to meet organizational needs
  • Take responsibility for the design, installation, upgrading, operation, control, maintenance and effective use of technical components and monitor their performance to provide agreed levels of service and data integrity
  • Schedule and supervise all maintenance and installation work. Ensure that operational problems are identified and resolved
  • Design, code, test, correct, and document programs and scripts from agreed specifications and subsequent iterations, using agreed standards and tools

ARE YOU THE RIGHT CANDIDATE?

The successful candidate will have:

  • Master’s degree in journalism, international relations or related field, or the equivalent in experience
  • Proficiency in Javascript, HTML, CSS, and libraries (e.g.- D3) related to producing interactives, data, visualizations, and creating newsroom tools
  • Proficiency in graphic and information design, as well as related programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Affinity Designer
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of journalism, proper use of new and more traditional communications channels, having a solid communication and marketing background
  • Previous experience working in a multicultural or a multinational environment; or experience living and working abroad
  • Proficiency in written and oral English (first language ability)

Experience and expertise in:

  • Digital media/journalism/communications, a fast-paced organization with tight deadlines
  • Front-end development
  • Design and UX
  • Team management, 2-5 years (Desirable)
  • Organizing, running and evaluating digital initiatives of small and large scale in local and international environment
  • Communication strategies, including communication policies development
