Data Visuals Reporter

Job Summary

The Dallas Morning News is looking for a data visuals reporter to join its newsroom as a member of its award-winning data, investigative and design teams. This role is one of the most collaborative positions in the newsroom. You'll partner with reporters, editors, photographers, videographers and audience engagement editors to help produce visuals for ambitious in-depth investigative stories and quick turn dailies. You'll also have the opportunity to pitch, report and develop your own project ideas.

About the team
The News' data team is composed of data journalists but at our core, we are all storytellers. We have a wide range of skills, including data analysis and visualization. We work on a diverse set of topics, including elections and state government, health, education and the criminal justice system.

About you

  • You have at least a year of experience working with data visuals in a newsroom setting.
  • You're collaborative, adept at working with writers, editors and photographers to execute large projects. You also want to have a voice in story direction, especially in areas that pertain to data reporting and/or visual execution.
  • You're capable of pitching and reporting your own projects. While we work with other departments in the newsroom, we are not primarily a service desk and take pride in producing our own work.
  • You have experience writing front-end code in HTML, CSS and JavaScript to support and present your work to readers across a range of screen sizes and devices, whether that be digestible data visualizations or more full-fledged story presentations.
  • You know the basics of color theory and have an eye for accessibility
  • You have proficiency with standard off-the-shelf data visualization tools such as DataWrapper, Carto, QGIS and Tableau
  • You are familiar with data visualization libraries in JavaScript such as D3, Vega Lite and/or Mapbox GL JS.
  • You know React, or at least are interested in learning it.

Preferred skills

  • Knowledge of Node.js, Django or some other back-end web development framework
  • Experience deploying applications hosted in AWS or similar cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with database software such as PostgreSQL, SQLite or MongoDB.
  • Some experience with data analysis tools like Python Pandas, R dplyr, SQLite, PostgreSQL or similar
  • Skills in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign

If you don’t have all of the technical skills and experience listed in this ad but you can see yourself succeeding in this role we encourage you to apply.

This position also affords the opportunity to work remotely from anywhere in Texas, including our downtown Austin bureau.

The Dallas Morning News is committed to creating a more diverse newsroom and fostering an inclusive work environment for people from all backgrounds, regardless of race, gender, age or sexual orientation.
