Director of Washington Programs/Professor of Practice

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University seeks a news professional with national experience to expand and lead our Washington, D.C., student programs across multiple communications majors with a primary focus on journalism. The ideal candidate is a passionate, accomplished journalist who cares deeply about the industry and is motivated and inspired to help shape the careers of the next generation of journalists.

The Newhouse School has a long tradition of students in Washington, D.C., including a summer Broadcast Journalism graduate bureau, a fall Public Diplomacy program and the annual Toner Award for Political Reporting banquet in the spring. Now, the Newhouse School is expanding its footprint in our nation’s capital to a year-round venture that will provide students meaningful experiences and impact the D.C. media landscape through content creation in collaboration with professional partners.

The director's primary charge is to develop and deliver a dynamic slate of academic experiences for undergraduate and graduate students. The heart of our D.C. programs is a six-week newsroom capstone experience for broadcast journalism students; the director will build on the program's success and elevate it to a year-round experience. The director will also oversee sports-related capstone experiences and administer other D.C.-based classes and faculty. And as part of the new Center for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship, the school's Washington, D.C. programs will serve as a semester destination for students in public diplomacy, public relations, and advertising. The director will engage and support those students, too, and in doing so, help build an interdisciplinary hub of learning and idea exchange in our nation's capital.

The ideal candidate is a journalist with a strong D.C. network, a history of successful partnerships, a growth mindset and a strong motivation to nurture early-career communicators.

This position will hold the faculty rank of Professor of Practice and report to the Executive Director of the Center for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship.
