Investigations Reporter

Job Summary

Confidential is a well-funded digital news startup preparing to launch in Washington, D.C. this fall. Our goal is to create a radically different publication, one that uses a distinct set of formats to deliver a nuanced and comprehensive view of the most important stories of the day. We are hiring journalists excited to get in on the ground floor and help us shape our identity.

We are hiring journalists with strong reporting, writing and analytical skills who are excited by the challenge of taking a new approach to their work and continually testing new formats. We want to lay out the who, what, when, etc., and explain the multiple frames through which to understand the bigger picture. We consider applicants with other professional backgrounds and life experience who can show us they have the expertise, thoughtfulness and writing skills to do the work.

Confidential is hiring Investigative Reporters to join a new kind of investigative team. We are seeking applicants with particular qualifications: a broad diversity of experience and interests, deep empathy, a sixth sense of news timeliness, an expansive set of reporting techniques, a predilection for accountability, a boundless curiosity, and a purposefully rich and diverse media diet. Above all, they should have a commitment to teamwork as a foundation for exceptional journalism.

This position is not reserved for a candidate with years of experience as an investigative reporter. Instead, we seek reporters of any experience level who bring unique skill sets to their work. For example: extensive proficiency in open source investigative techniques; fluency in multiple languages; a background or depth of knowledge in a highly specialized or regulated industry or profession; experience in multiple industries, professions or the arts; particular geographic, cultural and subcultural fluencies; coding or data reporting skills. That list is incomplete, and we look forward to hearing from applicants what their uncommon strengths are.

Responsibilities:

Be a contributing member of a highly collaborative team and newsroom
Pitch, lead and execute investigative stories for a largely domestic audience of highly engaged, informed readers
Brainstorm, research, focus, report and deliver unique cross-beat projects with newsroom colleagues
Support other investigative and beat reporters in collaborative reporting projects, including breaking news investigations
Collaborate with the Investigations Editor to approach their work creatively
Experiment with story formats and approaches
Help build a robust, highly collaborative investigative team that consistently breaks news and delivers unique insights for a highly engaged, informed readership
Qualifications:

A desire to work in a highly collaborative environment
Demonstrated skill in investigative work
Remarkable clarity of thought and expression, including strong writing skills
A willingness to shift from long-term to short-term to breaking-news reporting in the course of a week
Endless curiosity and persistence
A commitment to examining issues through an equity lens
An entrepreneurial spirit
A broad diversity of experience and interests
An unusual ability to perceive and understand other people’s emotions and motivations
A sixth sense of news timeliness
An expansive set of reporting techniques
