In These Times, a national, monthly magazine that has covered politics and social movements from the left since 1976, is seeking a full-time investigative editor.
The editor will work primarily on stories for In These Times’ Leonard C. Goodman Institute for Investigative Reporting, which offers competitive rates to support ambitious investigations to be published in In These Times and InTheseTimes.com, as well as partner outlets. The Institute has made a name for itself uncovering corporate wrongdoing, exposing the wages of U.S. warmongering, and telling the stories of low-wage workers, Native people and others to whom the mainstream media gives short shrift.
The editor will be responsible for managing all aspects of an investigation, from writer recruitment to story selection to publication and promotion, as well as co-running the Institute with In These Times’ Executive Editor. The Goodman Institute supports both early-career and established investigative reporters; the investigative editor should be adept at calibrating their editing and guidance to the author’s experience level.
Minimum 5 years editing experience and 3 years investigative editing.
A talent for directing complex investigations, exceptional editing skills, and a passion for social justice.
BIPOC and members of other groups underrepresented in media are strongly encouraged to apply.
In These Times has frequently scooped the mainstream media on stories ranging from the first coverage of global warming and extensive investigative reporting on the Iran Contra scandal in the ’80s to early in-depth coverage of the genocide in the Sudan in 2004.
You will join a close-knit team that cares passionately about economic, racial and climate justice. We’re also a proud union workplace with an internal culture that strives to live up to the ideals we advocate every day through our journalism.
This is a full-time, remote position, with periodic travel to Chicago starting in 2022.
Salary starts at $58,000, commensurate with experience.
In These Times offers top-notch benefits: paid medical and dental (including for employee’s partner and/or family), employer-matched SIMPLE IRA, three months paid parental leave, 16 paid holidays per year, and 4 weeks paid vacation.
This is a union position with the NewsGuild-CWA.
Applications will be processed on a rolling basis.
Email resume, cover letter, and an editing sample (a draft of a story in which your comments and edits are visible) to email@example.com. Editing samples will be treated as confidential.
