Investigative Reporter

Job Summary

Investigative Post is seeking an aggressive reporter to produce deeply reported, high-impact investigative and enterprise stories on urban affairs in Buffalo, NY, for our website and television and radio partners.

We are seeking a reporter who:

  • Is aggressive and has produced in-depth stories on any subject. We don't expect everyone to be an "investigative" reporter, but we are looking for someone who has shown they can dig for the truth and has a passion for stories that are both important and written in an engaging way.
  • Wants to hone their investigative reporting skills for digital, radio and television audiences, and use data analysis and public records techniques to break stories.

What you will cover:

The focus of the beat is education, criminal justice and poverty. Buffalo ranks as one of the nation’s poorest cities, the metropolitan area as one of the most segregated. City schools suffer from poor student attendance and academic achievement. The city’s violent crime rate ranks among the highest in the nation and reform of the police department has been minimal. Buffalo’s housing stock is old and the city’s inspections department and housing court are ineffective.

About Investigative Post:

Investigative Post is a 10-year-old nonprofit investigative reporting center based in Buffalo. We have distribution partnerships with regional NBC and NPR outlets that, combined with our website and several other partnerships, reach an audience of up to 150,000 readers, viewers and listeners per story. Our reporting has been cited for excellence by Investigative Reporters & Editors, the Edward R. Murrow Awards, the Society of Environmental Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists and the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association. Editor Jim Heaney, has strong coaching skills and a track record of producing award-winning journalism.

We are always trying to improve our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the community we cover. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women and people of color.

This is a full-time position based in Buffalo. We cannot accommodate remote work for this intensely local journalism job.

Investigative Post pays competitive salaries and benefits packages for the region.
